DEI4Teach@ADBIS2026 Diversity, Equity and Inclusion for Teaching Advanced Databases and Information Systems
Aim and Scope
Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) are longstanding themes within the ADBIS community. In 2026, the ADBIS DEI Chairs launch DEI4Teach, a highly interactive workshop dedicated to DEI in the teaching of Advanced Databases and Information Systems. The topic will also be reflected in thebroader DEI initiatives of ADBIS 2026 and the DEI keynote of this year's conference. While ADBIS traditionally focuses on scientific advances, DEI4Teach shifts the attention to how we teach them and to whom. It offers an opportunity to reflect on teaching practices from a DEI perspective in a concrete and practice-oriented way. In this context, DEI is understood broadly and includes gender equity, cultural and linguistic diversity, accessibility, socio-economic background, and inclusion across different national and institutional contexts.
DEI4Teach is not a traditional research-paper track, but a space for sharing concrete practices and lessons learned. It focuses on two complementary dimensions:
- DEI in how we teach - pedagogical approaches, classroom dynamics, assessment practices, supervision, and inclusive learning environments.
- DEI in what we teach - examples, case studies, datasets, tools, and perspectives included in Advanced Databases and Information Systems courses.
Guiding questions
During the workshop, you will work together on questions such as:
DEI in how we teach
- Which inclusive practices are you already implementing in Advanced Databases and Information Systems courses?
- How do your current teaching and assessment methods support, or limit, equitable participation and success?
- Where do you encounter difficulties or tensions when teaching and supervising diverse student groups?
- What concrete changes or new practices could you introduce to make your teaching more inclusive and fair?
DEI in what we teach
- What kinds of examples, datasets, and case studies do you currently use in your courses?
- To what extent do these materials reflect diverse contexts, users, and perspectives?
- Where might bias or underrepresentation appear in the technical content you teach?
- How could you revise or enrich your course content to better integrate DEI and ethical perspectives?
Contributions
We invite short, practice-oriented contributions (0.5–2 pages). Submissions should describe experiences, initiatives, challenges, or reflections related to DEI in teaching Advanced Databases and Information Systems. Each contribution should:
- Indicate whether it addresses (1) DEI in how we teach, (2) DEI in what we teach, or (3) both.
- Briefly describe the teaching context (country, institution, course degree, course level, course title, student population).
- Present the experience or challenge.
- Highlight lessons learned, open questions, or transferable insights.
Each contribution should be written in English. You can use Springer's authors' formatting guidelines. Papers should be sent in PDF format to adbis26-dei@sciencesconf.org.
Contributions will be revised by workshop organizers. Accepted contributions will be presented as short flash talks during the workshop to spark discussion and collaborative work.
We kindly ask authors to adopt inclusive language in their contributions and flash talks (https://dbdni.github.io/pages/inclusivewriting.html and https://dbdni.github.io/pages/inclusivetalks.html), and all participants to follow the workshop code of conduct (https://dbdni.github.io/pages/codeofconduct.html).
Workshop format
DEI4Teach is designed as an interactive and participatory workshop, not a mini-conference. Active engagement is essential, and participants are expected to contribute actively to discussions and collaborative activities.
The workshop will include:
- Icebreaker activities to create an open and constructive discussion space.
- Flash talks of accepted contributions.
- Small-group working tables on (1) DEI in how we teach and (2) DEI in what we teach, in the context of Advanced Databases and Information Systems.
- A plenary synthesis of the discussions.
Outcomes
By participating in DEI4Teach, you will:
- Exchange concrete teaching practices, tools, and classroom experiences related to DEI in Advanced Databases and Information Systems.
- Identify common challenges and promising approaches across different countries and institutional contexts.
- Develop actionable ideas to improve inclusiveness in your own teaching and assessment practices.
- Connect with colleagues interested in continuing collaboration and exchange on DEI in teaching beyond ADBIS 2026.
The themes and contributions of DEI4Teach will be made visible to the broader ADBIS conference community. A shared space, including a collaborative resource board, will enable all ADBIS participants to engage asynchronously with the workshop outcomes and to contribute further practices and experiences related to DEI in teaching.
In addition, building on both the workshop discussions and the contributions collected during the conference, we will prepare a joint paper summarizing the submitted contributions and the key outcomes of the workshop discussions, co-authored by all the DEI4Teach workshop participants. The resulting paper will be submitted for publication to a peer-reviewed venue with a specific interest in DEI and data education. The venue will be decided together during the workshop.
